November’s here and there’s a nice chill in the air (well, not if you live in Phoenix). With Thanksgiving rapidly approaching, now is a good time to go over some tips for making sure your dog enjoys Thanksgiving just as much as you do.

Don’t Give Fido Human Thanksgiving Food

My family’s two dogs used to bark and salivate while our glistening turkey sat on the counter waiting to be sliced up. My dad, generous man that he is, once thought our oldest dog might enjoy some giblets and grease on top of her food. Bad, bad idea, as we all discovered the next morning when we came downstairs to a pungent smell and piles of diarrhea all over the carpet. Holiday dishes are typically loaded with carbs and fats that can overwhelm your dog’s system. Do yourself and them a favor by ignoring their begging and not giving them any human food.

Do Give Fido Dog Thanksgiving Food

If you can’t stand to listen to your dog whine and plead for scraps, make a special Thanksgiving treat just for them. Rover.com has complied a great collection of 7 Thanksgiving dog treat recipes designed solely for your four-legged pal on the best eating day of the year.

Do Help Fido Stress Less

Holidays are busy, crazy times for most people filled with many visits from relatives and friends. Things can get kind of chaotic and stressful, but not just for you, for your dog too. If you’re planning a party, see if you can board your dog for the night or ask someone to dog sit. If you’re having people over at the last minute, give Fido a chew treat and move his bed to a room where he can happily chew to his heart’s content away from the noise and crowd.

Don’t Ignore Fido

Inevitably, your dog will be around when everyone’s enjoying their food. So keep an eye on your four-legged pal to make sure he or she isn’t getting into the trash or jumping on the counter to sample the goods while you can’t give him all your attention. Also be sure to remind all your guests that as cute as Fido is when he begs, they shouldn’t give him people food.

Thanksgiving is a great time of year, and with these tips, both you and your dog can enjoy the most thankful of days!
