If you’ve ever researched the pros and cons of raw dog food vs dry dog food, you know it’s a hotly debated topic. I’ve grappled with the issue myself over the years, especially when I stumble upon yet another article extolling the benefits of raw food while disparaging kibble. So how do you figure out the best thing to feed your dog?
Talk to Your Vet
This is the first and most important step in the process, not researching, researching, and more researching. In the end, your vet is the one who knows your dog the best and can give you the most subjective opinion. Ask a lot of questions, maybe even print out some articles you’ve found. Then take your vet’s suggestions into consideration when deciding.
Talk to Friends and Family
All dogs are different, so, just like when you research online, you’ll find a variety of opinions when talking to family and friends about raw food vs. dry food. Some dogs thrive with uncooked meals while others do better with kibble. Hear from both sides can be eye-opening and even heated at times. Just remember that in the end, what to feed your dog is your choice and your choice only.
Let Your Dog Decide
Dogs have sensitive stomachs and switching their food can take time and patience. If you have the time and patience, and if your vet okays it, give your four-legged pal some raw food and see how he likes it. Just be prepared for adverse side effects. Again, with time and patience, your dog may grow to love raw food. But if he’s not interested, return to what was working in the first place.
Switching from dry food to raw food is a big decision and one you shouldn’t take lightly. But by talking to the right people and doing plenty of research, you’ll discover the best choice for your dog.
