How to Prep for a Dog Vacation

Going on vacation is stressful enough, but bringing your dog along can up the stress factor even more. Since I adopted Socks, I’ve taken him on several out-of-town trips and they’ve all gone smoothly. Why? Because I prep. The best way to reduce stress for you and your dog is by planning ahead. Here are some tips on how to prep for a dog vacation.

Make a List

This is an obvious one, but it bears repeating because it’s that important: make a list of everything your dog will need on vacation before you leave and make the list several days before you leave. This eliminates any last minute shopping trips for toothpaste or extra dog food. Try to go through a typical day (and week, depending on how long your trip is) to figure out exactly how many toys, treats, and other essential items to bring.

Pack Early

Do not wait until the day you leave to round up all of your four-legged pal’s things; you’re already going to be busy dealing with your own packing (and possibly the packing of other family members). Gather as many of your pet’s necessities as you can before the day of the trip and keep the box where you’ll be sure to see it and remember it when you’re heading out.

Bring Enough Food Plus Extra

Measure out how much food your dog will be eating, plus a little extra. That way if something unexpected occurs (i.e. flight delay, car problems) at least you won’t have to worry about finding food for your pet.

Don’t Over Pack

We’ve all brought along five extra pairs of shoes when we only wear two while packing for our vacations. Don’t make the same mistake with your dog. Does he really need six squeaky toys or three boxes full of treats? Probably not. How you’re traveling can also affect how you pack. If you’re flying, the less extras the better. If you’re driving, you can stuff more things into your car.

Vacations tend to bring out anxiety in people. But they’re supposed to be fun, especially if you’re taking your pet along. Try to relax and enjoy your time away from home with your favorite four-legged pal!
