Maybe your pooch decides to roll in cow manure during a walk one day. Or maybe she dashes outside after a rain storm and rolls in all the muddy puddles. Maybe you start to notice a nasty stench and realize it’s coming from your favorite four-legged pal. Whatever the reason, eventually, every dog needs a bath. While taking your dog to a professional is fine, giving your dog a bath at home doesn’t have to involve tears and howling. Here are some tips on how to give your dog a bath at home.
Gather All Your Materials
Make sure you have everything you’ll need to bathe your dog before you begin. Some essential items include: shampoo, towels, a brush, a comb, and a hairdryer. You don’t want to turn the water on only to realize you left the towels in the kitchen or the house.
Pick a Spot
Inside or outside? This really depends on the size of your dog and your dog’s bathing preferences. Small and medium sized dogs can usually fit comfortably in the shower or bath tub while it may be easier to bathe a larger dog in the wide-open space of a backyard.
Be Calm
Bathing a dog, especially a dog who doesn’t want to be bathed, is an exercise in patience. Yelling and shouting if your dog tries to get away while you soap her up is not a good idea. Keep calm so your dog will stay calm, thus leading to a more enjoyable bathing experience.
Praise
Some dogs enjoy getting bathed and others do not. If your dog lands in the ‘do not’ camp, be sure to praise him constantly as you’re bathing him and give him a treat right after. This will help your dog understand that bath time doesn’t have to be a painful struggle.
