Purple and Paws The other week I returned from my second round of overnight pet sitting for family friends. Unlike the first time, this go-round I was more prepared since I knew what to expect. So I thought it would be fun to share some tips from my experiences.
Have the Name and Number of the Family Vet Available
Most likely, whoever you’re pet sitting for will give you this information but make sure it’s somewhere easily accessible in case of emergency. During my first pet sitting experience, I ended up having to take one of the dogs to the vet because of a nasty cut he’d acquired. The owners had the name and number of their clinic on the fridge and the instruction sheet, so I didn’t panic and waste time looking for it.
Let the Pets Get to Know You on Their Terms
All cats and dogs have different timetables when it comes to accepting new people. The first time I pet sat, all the animals except one cat approached me for love and cuddles. The second time I pet sat, the wary cat finally came over and wanted to be petted. Success! All because I didn’t push and let her get comfortable with me.
Follow the Owners’ Schedule Exactly
Pets thrive on routine so it’s important that you follow the owners’ instructions. Give the pets you’re looking after the same food they always get, let them out at the same time their owners always do, and play with the same toys they always play with. The whole reason you’re pet sitting in the first place is to not stress these animals out and let them be comfortable. Always remember that.
Stick Close to Home
When you get to live in a different house for a week, it can be easy to forget the main reason you’re there is to take care of the four-legged inhabitants. I know there were a few times when I thought about going out and exploring the new area I was staying in but ultimately, I decided not to. I was being paid to stay with the dogs and cats, after all, not bound around town.
Pay Attention
Just like you would with your own pets, pay close attention to all the animals under your care. The whole reason you’re with them in the first place is to make sure they’re happy and safe. Even better, send daily updates along with pictures to the owners so they can know and see that their fur babies are doing well.
